WR Students Compete in 2017 Tournament of Books
Posted on 04/10/2017

Tournament of BooksStudents at Western Row are competing in a Tournament of Books by voting for their favorite book of the 2016-2017 school year.

The committee, also known as WR Media Center Specialist Sil Bobinski, selected eight books from all the books read to students throughout the year. Books were paired up for Round 1, similar to the NCAA Basketball Tournament.  In the first round, students voted for four of their favorite books.

"We are currently in the Final Four, so students will be voting for two of their favorites," explained Bobinski. "The remaining books are Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester vs. Minnie's Diner by Dayle Ann Dodds, and President Taft is Stuck in the Bath by Mac Barnett vs That is Not a Good Idea by Mo Willems."

After this round, there will be two books left for the Final Round and the Championship. The early favorites among students are Tacky the Penguin and President Taft Is Stuck in the Bath. Who will win?!

"It was fun explaining the concept of the tournament to the kiddos who were not familiar with how brackets work, but it was particularly exciting to see the kids faces when they got off the bus this morning," said Bobinski. "As they passed the Media Center, they wanted to see which books "moved on" in the brackets. They expressed delight when their book "made it", or disappointment when their choice did not."

"The kids are very engaged in this activity!  This is my third year doing the Tournament of Books, and the previous winner repeated and is still on the board. Will that book be dethroned?  Stay tuned...!"
