MI 6th Graders Apply Scientific Method to Consumer ChallengeMason Intermediate sixth grade scientists recently worked in small research teams to challenge the claims of products available to consumers. From head-to-head cleaning challenges to discovering just which brand of paint dries faster, students took the lead in their learning by investigating their world using the scientific method.

"The Consumer Challenge is an annual student run science investigation where students choose a product to test, create an investigation for testing the product, conduct the experiment, and then analyze the data collected," shared MI science teacher Chris Anderson. "This project was the culmination of the sixth graders’ science process unit. During this unit, students learned how to create, conduct, and analyze data from a scientific investigation."

"We have been studying the scientific method and learning how scientists use the scientific process to test products.  In class, we have tested a variety of products. As a final project to this unit, the students participated in a Consumer Challenge," explained Susan Grable, MI Team Patriots science teacher. "Students worked in small groups and designed their own product test. The students were responsible for deciding on a question that their test answered, wrote a hypothesis, listed the procedures for the test, conducted an experiment, collected data, wrote a conclusion, and posted their findings.”

The investigation culminated into the Consumer Challenge Event on October 25 when students presented their work in a “science fair” fashion. "I bet our wing easily had 150 people attend! Great participation. It is always a pleasure watching parents interact with and learn from students that have worked so hard on their projects," shared Grable. "It truly is a great night!"
