Mason's Child Nutrition Department Introduces Kids to New Fruits & Veggies
Picky eater? You might be surprised to see how quickly your child gobbles new fruits and veggies when they are introduced by the Executive Corporate Chef for the Cincinnati Reds!
On March 2, Chef  James Major visited the Mason Intermediate 56 cafeteria during lunch to introduce Mason's fifth and sixth graders to some fruits and vegetables they may have not tried before. There was a variety of food samples for kids to try including fennel, micro pea tendrils, chayote squash, ugli fruit, and starfruit just to name a few!

"Bringing a chef into the school very much fits into our department goals of educating students about food and showing them that healthy eating can be fun! The creativity and culinary expertise of someone like Chef James can be a powerful influence on students," shared MCS Child Nutrition Office Supervisor Tamara Earl. "We offered a wide range of wholesome and fresh fruits and vegetables to open up their diets to new flavors. It was wonderful to see so many students enthusiastic and willing to sample - we distributed over 1,000!"

Mason Intermediate sixth grader Nicholas Hawk looked wide-eyed at the array of fruits and veggies on display, "I've never seen any of those foods before." As he tentatively tried the fennel and Asian pear a wide smile appeared. "These are great!" he said.

On the same day as Chef Major’s visit and in celebration of National Reading Month and Dr. Seuss’ birthday, the Child Nutrition Office gave away ten books to students who were chosen at random through the Point of Sale system. Any child who made a purchase in the Mason Early Childhood Center or Western Row cafeteria were eligible to win.
During the week of March 7-11, the Child Nutrition Office will recognize National School Breakfast Week. On Tuesday, March 8, any student who makes a breakfast purchase at the Mason Early Childhood Center, Western Row Elementary, and Mason Intermediate will receive a Kellogg's Olympic Cereal Bowl.
