Little Library Honors Mason TeachersMason Middle School eighth grader Joseph Washington was looking for an Eagle Scout Project that would impact his community in a BIG way. And, at the same time, beloved retired Mason teacher Gayle Ertel was looking for a way to preserve the legacy of Mason Heights and Western Row Elementary Schools.

Together, Washington and Ertel's dreams came true when they opened Little Library #1 on November 10 at the corner of Tylersville Road and Foxfield Drive.

Little Library #1 is dedicated to “The teachers of Mason Heights and Western Row who taught our community to read. (1960-2019)”

The community shared the excitement and appreciation on Mason City Schools' Facebook page:

"How wonderful!! A lovely tribute to the amazing teachers our boys had at both schools. Thank you so much!! Keep reading!!" shared Bridgette Hutson.

"A gift that will keep on giving! Glad I was a part of that wonderful community and able to inspire young readers," added Sally Caporale.

"He’s a great young man! It does not surprise me at all that he would be part of something like this!" shared Melissa Lohman in reference to Washington.

This Little Library is specifically a children’s library. Community members who are interested may donate board books through young adult books. To learn more visit
